The Monsters In My Head

“Writers aren’t people exactly. Or if they’re any good, they’re a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person.” F. Scott Fitzgerald
Anyone who knows me knows that I think F. Scott Fitzgerald is quite possibly the best American novelist--certainly of the twentieth century, if not all time. Of all his brilliant quotes, this one, from The Love of the Last Tycoon, rings the truest to me. Especially now, when I’m busy creating so many monsters, all at once, for about 8-10 hours every day. (And if you think that's a lot of time, you should see what David Levin is doing there in his monster-making laboratory In New Jersey--I swear the man doesn't sleep!)

I should be used to having lots of characters bouncing around my brain by now. I’ve written so many books and created tons of kid characters over the years. But this is different. For one thing, I’m not just writing scripts for Monsters Aren't Real???. On any given day, I’m also posting about the show on social media, coming up with new ideas for upcoming episodes and blogging here. None of those ever seem to be about the same characters. (I’m kind of glad some of the characters have been helping out with the blog posts—it gives my fingers a break.)
It’s getting a little crowded up there in my prefrontal cortex. But hey! At least I’m never lonely.
There are so many monsters jockeying for scream time in my head that I sometimes catch myself saying their dialogue out loud. And not just at my desk. I’ve done it on the elliptical at the gym, in the park, and walking the dog on the sidewalk. It’s a good thing I live in New York City—because nobody even seems to give it a second thought. That's a relief, because if someone did notice, what would I tell them—I’m not really crazy, I’m just a writer?
Anyway, trust me when I say that all the creating, thinking, imagining and random babbling out loud is worth it—because when you guys see the world David Levin and I have come up with, you’re going to be blown away! I’m almost finished with the script for episode 8. Wait until you get a look at the dust up scene I just wrote!
Don’t forget, you can be part of Monsters Aren’t Real???! Go to the Kickstarter, back the show, and join the monster madness. You’re gonna love the rewards the monsters have waiting for you.
Speaking of which, a werewolf is howling at me to get back to work, and some devilish dust bunnies are telling me to hop to it. So I guess I’m gonna sign off here.
And remember, the next time you see someone talking to themselves, don't automatically think they're out of their minds--they might just be writing the next great novel.
